Baltic index drops to a one-week low, as Capesize rates fall

Posted to Maritime Reporter on June 11, 2024

The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight indicator, which tracks rates of ships transporting dry bulk goods, reached its lowest level since a week Tuesday. This was mainly due to lower capesize rates.

* The overall index which includes rates for capesizes, panamaxes and supramaxes fell 52 points or 2.76% to 1,831 - its lowest level since the 4th of June.

The capesize Index dropped 201 points or 6.73 % to 2,784, the lowest level since May 30,

The average daily earnings of capesize ships, which transport cargoes such as coal and iron ore, typically weighing 150,000 tons, were down $1,670 to $23,089.

* The price of iron ore futures has fallen to its lowest level in two months, due to the lingering weakness of fundamentals as well as concerns about the demand outlook for China's top steel consumer following the recent carbon emission plan.

* The panamax Index reached its highest level since 24 May and was up by 38 points or about 2.15 % to 1,807 point.

The average daily earnings of panamax vessels that carry 60,000 to 70,000 tons coal or grain cargo increased from $346 up to $16,265.

The supramax index for smaller vessels increased by 14 points or 1.11% to 1,271 point.

Authorities said that recent rains in Germany had increased the water level in parts of the Rhine River. Reporting by Anmol Chaubey, Bengaluru. Editing by Shreya biswas
