Australia dominates the Dubai SailGP opener
DUBAI (Nov 23) - Triple SailGP champions Australia began their campaign for 2025 with authority, taking the lead on the first day of racing in Dubai.
The Australians showed off their tactical skills in a new, striking livery. Chris Draper joined the team and the Australians were able to display a sharp sense of direction. The Australians' 3-5-1 results included an impressive win in the third race of the fleet, which was particularly impressive given their previous struggles in light wind conditions.
Peter Burling and New Zealand, under the leadership of Andy Maloney, managed to overcome crew disruptions following Andy Maloney’s move to SailGP debutants Mubadala Brazil. They ended the day as second overall. Emirates GBR was helmed once again by SailGP veteran Dylan Fletcher and finished third, tied with Canada and United States.
The sailors faced shifting winds between 10 and 15 km/hr, racing with only four crews. This made precise starts vital. The teams that crossed the finish line first were able to take advantage of their position and gain an advantage over the rest of the fleet.
Taylor Canfield led the United States to a dominant start in the first race. Canada and Mubadala Brazil had a thrilling duel in race two, where Canada came out on top. Germany won their second fleet race.
Australia's dominance was on display in the third race of the fleet, as a perfectly timed start propelled them ahead to Mark One. The Australians maintained their lead despite pressure from Britain and Canada. They crossed the line almost two minutes in front of the British team.
Mubadala Brazil, in a dramatic final, surged to sixth place, passing four boats.
Australia leads the way with 24 points ahead of New Zealand, which is on 23. The United States, Canada and Britain are all tied for third place with 18 points each.
The racing continues on Sunday, with two fleet races remaining before the final. (Editing by Ed Osmond).
