11 dead in Indian Capital after heavy rain and flight operations stutter
According to the Times of India, 11 people have died in New Delhi due to the sudden, heavy rain this week, including four Indian citizens who drowned underpasses that were submerged. Flight operations in the Indian capital also slowed down.
New Delhi, which suffered one of the worst heatwaves it has ever experienced earlier this month, was hit with the most torrential downpour for decades on the 28th June. The rainfall total in New Delhi in just one day exceeded the average amount in the city over the course of the month.
The torrential downpours caused massive traffic jams and power and water shortages in some parts of Delhi. They also led to a roof collapse that resulted in a fatality at one of Delhi's three main airport terminals.
Flightaware, a flight tracking platform, says that in the past 24 hours, there were 60 cancellations at New Delhi's main international airport.
An airport official confirmed that Sunday's operations were mostly normal, and most flights were diverted from the affected terminal to the two other terminals. However, he did not exclude the possibility of flight cancellations during the day.
Delhi Airport is the busiest and largest airport in India.
Terminal 1, now closed, was primarily used by IndiGo (operated by Interglobe Aviation) and SpiceJet. It has the capacity to handle up to 40 million passengers per year.
