Malaysia’s Boustead Heavy Industries has won a deal for submarine facilities upkeep for the Royal Malaysian Navy.The company said Thursday that it had on April 21, accepted the Letter of Acceptance dated April 7, 2021, from the Ministry of Defence Malaysia representing the Government of Malaysia, related to the submarine facilities work.The contract value is RM78,141,440.00 (~around $19million) for a contract period of twenty-four months from January 1, 2021, until December 31, 2022.

From April 16-19, 2018, Naval Group will participate to the sixteenth edition of DSA, the Defence Service Asia exhibition. The expeditionary fast transport ship USNS Brunswick (T-EPF-6) concluded a port visit to Kuching, Malaysia, Jan. 17. The search for missing Sailors assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) continues in the South China Sea and within the ship itself. On Aug. 22, Adm. Scott Swift, commander, Pacific Fleet, announced that the remains of a number of the 10 missing John S. McCain Sailors were discovered within the ship. On Aug. 23, U.S. Navy and Marine Corps divers continue to search the ship, seeking to locate more of the missing Sailors. In addition, they are conducting inspections of the damage to inform repair plans. More divers will join the effort Aug. 24. At sea, search efforts are focused on an area east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore where John S. McCain was involved in a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC Aug. 21.

HMAS Ballarat has sailed into her home port of Fleet Base West in Rockingham, Western Australia, to a large gathering of family and friends after completing a three month deployment to South East Asia and; participating in Exercise TALISMAN SABER off the Australian coast. The deployment, which began in early April, was part of the Australian Government’s efforts to promote regional stability and improve interoperability between regional partners and included port visits to Zhanjiang, Singapore, Sattahip, Bangkok, Da Nang and Kota Kinabalu. Amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) arrived Aug. 21 at Changi Naval Base, Republic of Singapore and is moored across the pier from the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56). While in Singapore, America will provide messing and berthing services to McCain crew members and to support damage control efforts on board. America will also support ongoing searches for 10 missing Sailors. Ship Repair Facility divers are on scene as well to assess the damage to the hull. McCain was involved in a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore early in the morning on Aug. 21 (as reported 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time) and arrived at Changi Naval Base in the afternoon.

Australia's HMAS Ballarat has completed a port visit to Sepanggar, Malaysia as part of a three month South East Asia deployment. She was in the region to enagage with the Royal Malaysian Navy, and load supplies before she returns to Australia for further exercises. Chief of Joint Operations, Vice Admiral David Johnston, said Ballarat’s deployment provided an opportunity to engage with many nations in South East Asia. “Our enduring military to military engagement activities contribute to security and stability in our region,” he said. Nine crew members of a Malaysian navy boat are missing after they lost contact with their parent ship while chasing away intruding fishermen, the navy said on Monday. The nine were part of a boarding team from the warship KD Perdana, on patrol off the south coast, the Royal Malaysian Navy said in a statement. The team was chasing several foreign fishing boats out of Malaysian waters when contact was lost on Saturday evening. A search-and-rescue operation was launched about an hour later, after the KD Perdana failed to find the boat, the navy said. Eleven ships and two aircraft had been deployed for the search, it said. Southern Malaysian waterways, which border Indonesia and Singapore, include busy international shipping lanes and rich fishing grounds.

Admiral Sunil Lanba, PVSM, AVSM, ADC, Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) and Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Indian Navy is on a goodwill visit to Malaysia from 11 to 15 April 2017. The visit is intended to consolidate and enhance bilateral maritime relations between India and Malaysia and is expected to provide a major boost to defence relations between India and Malaysia. During his visit, the Admiral will hold discussions with the Deputy Minister of Defence, Chief of Royal Malaysian Defence Forces along with the Chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force of Malaysia. The Indian and the Royal Malaysian Navies cooperate with each other in terms of training, operational interactions as well as interacting at various multilateral forums like Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, MILAN and ADMM Plus.

Malaysia has said that more than 100 Chinese fishing boats have been spotted within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) off Sarawak in the latest incident involving Chinese vessels in the disputed waters. The boats were sighted near Beting Patinggi Ali, also known as Luconia Shoals, about 100km off the coast of Miri in Sarawak. Malaysia planned to take action against them. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the government has instructed the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to deploy its assets to monitor the situation. "Three MMEA vessels have been deployed to the area. The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) assets are also there.

PALFINGER NED-DECK announced the receipt of a few million dollar order from Boustead Naval Shipyard for the Royal Malaysian Navy to deliver 12 aluminum davits within the next 10 years for six Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) which will be built in Lumut, Malaysia. The Second Generation Patrol Vessel (SGPV), also called Littoral combat ships is a class of six stealth frigates being build for the Royal Malaysian Navy. The ships are based on an enlarged version of the Gowind-class corvette, designed by DCNS of France.

The sudden appearance of a submarine has caused excitement among hundreds of ferry users at Penang Port, Malaysia. The Australian navy submarine HMAS Sheean arrived in for a visit Penang at around 11.30am Monday. HMAS Sheean is in the port for the crewmen’s holiday before they start a joint exercise with a Malaysian submarine later. Penang Port Sdn Bhd senior general manager (corporate support division) Md Derick Basir said the vessel, which is 77.8m long and 7.8m wide, will be here until Oct 2. In a statement, the Royal Malaysian Navy said Collins-class submarine HMAS Sheean was in Malaysian waters for a joint exercise with KD Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kota Kinabalu on Oct 12 and Oct 13. HMAS Sheean is the fifth Collins Class Submarine built by the ASC in Adelaide, Australia.

Oil tanker MT Orkim Harmony arrived safely at the Kuantan Port in Tanjung Gelang about 7am today (Saturday, June 20), nine days after it was hijacked by a group of pirates off Tanjung Sedili, Johor. The vessel, which was carrying about 6,000 tonnes of Ron95 fuel worth RM21 million, was escorted to the port by Royal Malaysian Navy's (RMN) fast attack craft KD Handalan. A spokesman for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said the vessel arrived at the port at 7.50am and berthed at the Petronas Pier. RMN Commander of Marine Region 1, Rear Admiral Datuk Azhari Abdul Rashid has confirmed that the suspects detained by the Vietnamese authorities had been identified as the hijackers of oil tanker MT Orkim Harmony.

The overlapping territorial disputes in the South China Sea involve China, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines and Vietnam have recently been moving from bad to worse. Vietnam is seeking to upgrade its air defences by acquiring western fighter jets and drones, a move which would further militarize a dispute with Beijing over territorial claims in the South China Sea. Taiwan's coast guard has commissioned its biggest ships for duty in the form of two 3,000-ton patrol vessels, as the island boosts defenses amid concerns about China's growing footprint in the disputed South China Sea, says a report in the Reuters. L-3 SAM Electronics announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide the electrical distribution system for six Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). The ships will be built at the Boustead Naval Shipyard in Lumut, Malaysia, with Design Authority provided by DCNS of France. Deliveries are scheduled between 2017 and 2021. “We are extremely proud to be selected to provide our state-of-the-art technology for the Royal Malaysian Navy’s newest class of ships,” said Armin Groth, managing director of integrated systems at L-3 SAM Electronics. “This latest project follows the earlier successful completion of similar work we performed for the RMN’s fleet of six Offshore Patrol Vessels.
