Bosun Crushed: Unsafe Practices Had Become Normal
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has released its report into a crush incident on board ro-ro cargo vessel Clipper Pennant in Gladstone Dock, Liverpool, England on July 20, 2021.At 1353 on that day, the bosun was fatally crushed while working on the vessel’s vehicle deck as the vessel was being loaded with a cargo of semi-trailers.A tractor unit driver pushed a semi-trailer into a corner space, marshalled by the vessel’s bosun in their assigned role as banksman. The accident was not seen by the driver, who disconnected the tractor unit and drove away.
Grimaldi Takes Delivery of Fifth Energy-Efficient Con-Ro
The Grimaldi Group took delivery of the fifth G5-class multipurpose con-ro from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.Named Great Casablanca, this vessel will operate between Northern Europe and West Africa, like all six sister ships in the series.With length of 250 metres, beam of 38 metres and deadweight of 45,684 tonnes, the design of the G5 vessels has a completely customized internal configuration enabling them to transport 4,700 linear metres of rolling freight, 2,500 CEU (Car Equivalent Units) and 2,000 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units).
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Receives Orders for Methanol-Fueled RoRos
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has received orders from Toyofuji Shipping and Fukuju Shipping for Japan's first methanol-fueled roros.The two ships will be built at the Enoura Plant of MHI's Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works in Yamaguchi Prefecture, with scheduled completion and delivery by the end of fiscal 2027.The ships will be approximately 169.9 meters in overall length and 30.2 meters in breadth, with 15,750 gross tonnage, and loading capacity for around 2,300 passenger vehicles.A windscreen at the bow and a vertical stem are used to reduce propulsion resistance…
MacGregor Wins Supply Contract for Four Höegh Autoliners PCTCs
MacGregor, part of Cargotec, was selected to supply comprehensive packages of RoRo equipment for four Aurora class pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) to be built by China Merchant Heavy Industries (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. for Höegh Autoliners.The order has a value of more than $15 million, with the first two vessels scheduled for delivery during the second half of 2024 and the next two in the first half of 2025.
