Spire Wins Canadian Government Contract for Ship Tracking Data

Spire Global, a provider of space-based data, analytics and space services, announced it has been awarded a CA $1.41 million contract by the Government of Canada for the provision of global automatic identification system (AIS) ship tracking data.The one-year contract includes options for two additional years, extending the total potential contract value to nearly CA $4.23 million, Spire said.Under the contract, Spire will share its real-time global ship tracking data, providing visibility in both open oceans and high-traffic zones.

Ocean Alliance Calls APM Terminals Port Elizabeth

APM Terminals Port Elizabeth welcomed the 8,700 TEU capacity CMA CGM Bianca, marking the first call of the weekly Ocean Alliance US East Coast Loop 3 Service, providing direct service to the US East Coast from ports in China and Southeast Asia. After a formal welcoming ceremony held at the facility, APM Terminals Port Elizabeth hosted a reception for senior executives of Ocean Alliance member lines to commemorate the occasion. The CMA CGM Bianca arrived and departed on schedule with a berth productivity of 129.2 moves per hour (MPH) for the 4,393 container moves at the terminal, for 30.1 gross MPH, and average dwell for rail-destined containers of less than one day. Until recently, container ships calling the Port of New York & New Jersey were mainly of the 5,000-8,000 TEU size class.

Cost Reduction Through Modified EMC Regulation

The joint proposal to applicate risk based EMC regulations has been accepted and will be implemented January 2017. The intention of this proposal is to reduce EMC related costs by applying a risk based approach combined with smart installation methods. The proposal has been submitted by the “EMC for future ships” work group. Partners of RH Marine in this work group are: Damen, Thales, DMO, Lloyd’s Register and University of Twente. EMC stands for Electromagnetic compatibility, meaning that equipment won’t be interfered by phenomena such as radio frequency fields and switching transients.

Indian Ports to Implement RFID

All Major Ports have been directed to implement the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system to track the movement of men, materials and vehicles within the port premises on real time basis. Implementation of RFID system will eliminate manual checking of documents at port gate and real time tracking of movement of vehicles, men and materials. This would reduce congestion and also cost of operations at Ports. Ports have been directed to have the RFID system in place by 31.03.2017. At Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), Kolkata Port Trust,  for RFID based Vehicle Tracking and Management System work order placed on 9.5.2016. Software developed and other activities are in process. The entire project will be implemented by 31.12.2016.

US Navy Strengthens Battlespace Situational Awareness

The U.S. Office of Naval Research has awarded BAE Systems an $11 million contract to develop next-generation electronic warfare (EW) technology that will quickly detect, locate, and identify emitters of radio frequency signals. Known as the Full-Spectrum Staring Receiver (FSSR), this technology will enable near-instantaneous battlespace situational awareness, emitter identification and tracking, threat warning and countermeasure and weapon cueing. Conventional situational awareness systems are not able to deliver the high level of coverage and responsiveness that FSSR will provide.

Cyber World: Safer Seas via Phantom Ships

Are we that far away from phantom fully autonomous vessels plying the world’s seas? Not according to many in the know. Many predict by 2020 that we will see this type of ship with a limited crew in smaller applications such as the marine highway short haul scenarios, local ferry service such as the Staten Island ferry and offshore supply boats in the Gulf of Mexico. FreeSpeak II Wireless Systems for UK Navy

Ships Electronic Services Ltd (SES Ltd) has supplied Clear-Com FreeSpeak II digital wireless communication systems to the UK Ministry of Defence for three of its naval vessels, with more in the pipeline. SES Ltd, working with SeaKing Group Ltd, based in the North West of England was tasked with delivering strong, efficient and continuous wireless communication links throughout the vessels. “The MoD required clear communications for its engineers working in engine rooms and machinery spaces,” said Jeff Dixon, Sales Manager at SES Ltd. “This is a challenge faced by many vessel operators who traditionally use magnetic loop, conventional radio or infra-red solutions.

Metal Shark Delivers Port Security Fireboat

Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark announced it has delivered a 55-foot multipurpose port security vessel to the Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District in Louisiana. Based on Metal Shark’s Defiant-class monohull pilothouse design, the welded aluminum vessel is designed to support port security efforts and firefighting missions at the port district, located 20 miles south of New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi River. For this application, Metal Shark equipped the vessel with twin Cat C-18 diesel engines mated to Hamilton water jets.

Custom Boat Delivered to Port of South Louisiana

A custom built 75-foot multipurpose port security vessel built by Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark has been delivered for the Port of South Louisiana. Based on Metal Shark’s Endurance-class catamaran design, the welded aluminum vessel is designed to support fire rescue missions, Command and Control (C2) operations and around-the-clock port security efforts. Twin Cat C-18 diesel engines in a conventional straight-shaft inboard configuration propel the 75 Endurance’s catamaran hull to cruising speeds of 25 knots while yielding a nominal operating range of over 500 miles.
