WinGD's X-DF Engines to Power 25 QatarEnergy Newbuilds

WinGD’s X72DF-2.1 engines will power 25 vessels as part of the QatarEnergy’s North Field East (NFE) project. Karstensens Shipyard Taps Wärtsilä Power for Newbuild FVs

Danish shipbuilder Karstensens Shipyard placed main propulsion equipment orders for two new fishing vessels with Wärtsilä. The first vessel is a custom designed 77-m overall length fishing vessel the ‘Christina S’, owned and operated by the Fraserburgh, Scotland based Simpson family’s Christina S Fishing Company in partnership with P&J Johnston. It will be powered by a Wärtsilä 31 main engine, and will also feature other Wärtsilä solutions including an NOx Reducer emissions reduction system, the reduction gear, controllable pitch propeller, and ProTouch propulsion remote control system.

Fairbanks Morse Power for USS Cleveland (LCS 31)

Fairbanks Morse received a purchase order from Lockheed Martin – the U.S. Navy’s prime contractor on Littoral Combat Ship’s (LCS) Freedom variant – to build and deliver the main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE's) for the 16th ship of the class, USS Cleveland (LCS-31).USS Cleveland (LCS 31) will receive a pair of 16-cylinder FM Colt-Pielstick PA6B Sequentially Turbo Charged (STC) diesel engines; together providing more than 12 MW of propulsion power. The USS Cleveland (LCS 31) will rely on the Fairbanks Morse engines for its low speed cruising and mid-range speed propulsion demands.

Switzerland-headquartered developer of low-speed gas and diesel engines for marine propulsion Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd (WinGD) has launched four new short-stroke engines to address economic engine speeds and accommodate space constraints on several vessel types.The engine designer said in a press note that the range, starting with the X52-S2.0 and X62-S2.0 and their dual-fuel counterparts X52DF-S1.0 and X62DF-S1.0, feature a short piston stroke that is ideal for vessels with a shallow draught, small propeller diameter or low main deck height. Container feeders, ro-ro and con-ro vessels, multipurpose cargo vessels and vehicle carriers all have design conditions that demand a shorter stroke.

Washington Gets Funds for Green Ferries

Washington State Ferries will begin the process of converting three Jumbo Mark II vessels from diesel to hybrid-electric power.The government agency that operates automobile and passenger ferry service in the U.S. state of Washington as part of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced Tuesday the state will receive $35 million from the federal Volkswagen settlement to retrofit the Tacoma, Wenatchee and Puyallup.The ferry system is the largest consumer of diesel fuel in the state with over 18 million gallons of diesel burned each year, and the three Jumbo Mark II ferries account for 26 percent of total fuel consumption. This step brings the state ferry system closer to meeting the goals outlined in Gov.

KMW Enhances Cylinder Pressure Sensor

Germany's Kaufbeurer Mikrosysteme Wiedemann (KMW) has introduced a higher performance version of its Z01 sensor for measuring cylinder pressure in large diesel, gas and dual-fuel engines.“The further developments center on the measuring capability, accuracy and robustness of our Z01 sensors,” KMW project manager Daniel Maaß explains.“To facilitate the measurement of higher combustion pressures and to contribute to overall robustness, we have increased the temperature resistance of the sensing elements we use in the Z01 sensors. US Fines HHI $47Mln Over Dirty Engines

US authorities announced that South Korea's top shipbuilding conglomerate Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) will pay a US$47 million fine for illegally importing and selling dirty diesel engines in violation of American environmental rules.US Justice Department and and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that between 2012 and 2015, the company imported nearly 2,300 diesel-powered heavy construction vehicles with engines that did not meet US emissions standards.“Hyundai put profits above the public’s health and the requirements of the law,” Jeffrey Bossert Clark, head of the department’s environment and natural resources division…

DMC Wins Suppy Contract From Cape Arkona

Damen Marine Components (DMC), the manufacturer of rudder and steering systems, nozzles, winches and controls, said that it has won a contract to supply a steering system for the trawler Cape Arkona.Currently in build at the Baatbygg yard at Måløy in western Norway for Austral Fisheries, the 1,150m³ vessel is capable of alternating between operating as a freezer trawler, long liner and a potter vessel, all within the period of a single trip.According to a press note, DMC will be supplying the 70-metre vessel with a Van der Velden TIMON flap rudder with heal bearing and a Van der Velden COMMANDER rotary vane steering gear.The slim-profile TIMON flap rudder is a popular and proven system which delivers superior maneuvering and course-keeping performance compared to conventional rudders.

EIB Invests in Low-Emissions Outboard Engines

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a EUR 14 million venture loan agreement with Sweden’s Cimco Marine AB to co-finance its innovation and growth investments.As per the unsecured credit facility agreement, the EIB will finance up to 50 percent of Cimco’s development of a new family of diesel outboard engines, inter alia a 3 liter, 6- cylinder twin turbo BMW diesel engine with a number of power outputs between 200 hp and 300 hp."The total facility is split into three tranches of EUR 4 million (A), EUR 4 million (B) and EUR 6 million (C) respectively," it said.The availability period for the facility is 30 months from signing, during which Cimco can meet all milestones for tranches A-C.
