Seaspan Energy this week announced the launch of its third new 7,600m3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel, Seaspan Baker.This series is being built by CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (CIMC SOE) in China. The first two vessels, Seaspan Garibaldi (Nch’ḵay̓) and Seaspan Lions (Ch’ich’iyúy Elxwíkn), will be delivered later this year, followed by Seaspan Baker in 2025.Seaspan Baker is currently targeted to service the Long Beach containership market and will join Seaspan Lions in providing LNG fueling services for vessels on the West Coast of North America, Seaspan said.

Commodities trader Vitol has secured three LNG bunkering vessels to support its worldwide operations.The agreements were made through Vitol’s shipping company, Vitol International Shipping.The vessels were secured via a seven to ten year time charter agreement with Avenir LNG and an order for two vessels at the CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering shipyard in Nantong, China.The time charter agreement with Avenir is for one newbuild 20,000m3 LNGBV, and will commence at delivery from the shipyard in China in fourth quarter of 2026…

Switching to ammonia as a marine fuel could create new problems, according to a new study undertaken by researchers from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden.The researchers carried out life cycle analyses for batteries and for three electro-fuels (hydrogen, methanol and ammonia).
