Fincantieri Begins Genoa Bridge Construction

March 12, 2019

The inauguration ceremony of the Fincantieri Infrastructure production plant took place today in Valeggio sul Mincio (Verona) in the presence of the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

The first steel for the construction of the new Genoa bridge was also cut on the occasion.

Fincantieri Infrastructure, incorporated two years ago, is the company through which Fincantieri operates in the field of infrastructures.

Specialized in the design, fabrication and installation of steel structures for complex projects, it was set up to enhance the Group’s diversification strategy, building upon the company’s experience in the construction of bridges and steel products.

In October 2018, Fincantieri seized an opportunity to increase its expertise in the sector and, through its subsidiary Fincantieri Infrastructure, took over the Cordioli company, based in Valeggio sul Mincio, from the extraordinary administration procedure handled by the Ministry of Economic Development. This has allowed to safeguard many workers’ jobs, with a view to further increase the workforce in the future, and to relaunch a company widely known for having contributed to several prestigious projects in Italy and abroad.

"Thanks to the operation carried out by Fincantieri, the industrial warehouses of the plant, which covers 110,000 square meters (30,000 of which are indoors), have been restored and equipped with new technologically-advanced systems for cutting, welding and working the steel, including large thicknesses," said a press release.

Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri, stated: “We are proud of our contribution to the revamp of such a pivotal company. We have stepped in to avoid the collapse of businesses that made Italy famous worldwide and to preserve the areas abandoned by other industries operating in the field of large-scale infrastructure projects, hardly hit by the sector crisis”.

Bono concluded: ”We are extremely grateful to Prime Minister Conte, because his presence here witnesses the importance of the manufacturing sector in Italy”.
