Baltic Index Falls as Capesize Rates Touch 10-Week Low

The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, dipped on Monday as the capesize vessel segment touched its lowest in 10 weeks.

* The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels, fell 8 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,482 points.

* The capesize index lost 48 points, or about 2 percent, to 2,363 points, its lowest since July 2.

* Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 170,000-180,000 tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, decreased $307 to $18,369.

* The panamax index rose 16 points, or 1 percent, to 1,544 points.

* Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, increased by $129 to $12,378.

* The supramax index gained 2 points to 1,136 points.
