Kirby Christens the US' First Plug-in Hybrid Electric Inland Towboat

The United States' first plug-in hybrid electric inland towing vessel was christened at a ceremony in Houston on Friday as the commercial marine industry continues to implement new technologies to reduce its environmental footprint.Kirby Inland Marine's Green Diamond will be time chartered by Shell Trading (US) Company, which will use the vessel to push barges throughout the Houston port region. WWII Museum’s PT-305 Sails Again

Commercial workboat philanthropy on display on PT-305: WWII Museum’s PT-305 sails again after a far reaching donor-funded restoration. In March, the National WWII Museum in New Orleans launched its reconstructed PT-305, built locally by Higgins Industries in 1943. The museum acquired the boat known as the USS Sudden Jerk in 2007, restoration began in 2009, and it now sails Lake Pontchartrain as an interactive exhibit. PT-305, with a fifteen-man crew, belonged to a 12-ship squadron operating in the Mediterranean from 1944 until the war ended in 1945.

Boston Harbor Cruises Ferry to Undergo $2.6m Engine Refit

Boston Harbor Cruises’ Provincetown Ferry, the Salacia will be drydocked from January thru March 2015 to undergo a $2.6 million dollar engine refit. Boston Harbor Cruises (BHC) has purchased four MTU 12V4000M64 engines from Stewart & Stevenson. The engines, manufactured by Rolls Royce Power Systems subsidiary MTU, and assembled in Friedrichshafen, Germany, have been completed and successfully tested and are currently on a container ship headed for Boston. According to BHC, the Salacia will be the first EPA Tier III Certified Emissions Level vessel operating in Boston Harbor.

MTU Powers Fleet of Inland Waterway Towboats

Installing new MTU engines has improved Southern Towing’s fuel consumption and maneuverability.

MTU, the specialist for propulsion and power systems for ships and commercial marine equipment, has been selected by Memphis-based Southern Towing Company to power six inland waterway towboats. Four new and two existing vessels will be outfitted with a total of twelve Series 4000 Ironmen engines in 8- and 12-cylinder configurations. Bender Signs Contract to Build Tugs

Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc., Mobile, Ala., has signed a contract for the construction of three 150-ft. anchor handling tugs for Otto Candies, LLC, Des Allemands, La. In addition to the contracted three orders, the contract grants Otto Candies, LLC, an option to purchase five more identical vessels. The first three vessels will be delivered in 2000. The anchor handling tug dimensions are 150 x 50 x 21 ft. and have a 10,000 hp capacity. The vessels will have a triple screw propulsion system from Stewart and Stevenson Services, Inc. with two EMD 16-645-E6 diesel engines driving outboard Aquamaaster Z-drives and one EMD 20-710-G7B diesel engine through a Reintjes 6.19:1 reverse reduction gear driving a fixed pitch centerline propeller inside a kort nozzle.

New Dinner Cruise Vessel Delivered

Starship, a 175-ft. dinner cruise vessel, was recently delivered to Starship Cruise Lines of Biloxi, Miss. The mega-yacht style vessel was designed by DeJong & Lebet, Inc., Naval Architects, Jacksonville, and was built by Freeport Shipbuilding in Freeport, Fla. The vessel features distinctive yacht-type styling, with exterior and interior finishes to match. Starship is USCG-certified under Subchapter K for 600 passengers plus 30 crew. Starship carries a Stability Letter for Partially Protected waters. The vessel is designed to have a 5.5 ft. full load draft, in order to access some of the more shallow waterways in the Biloxi area. The hull is designed with tunnels to allow large enough propellers while minimizing the draft.
