The transaction between Oetker Group and Maersk Line for Maersk Line's acquisition of Hamburg Süd, the German container line, was closed on 30 November 2017. On 1 December 2016, Maersk Line announced its intention to acquire Hamburg Süd. The acquisition triggered a regulatory approval process in 23 jurisdictions which was successfully concluded on Tuesday 28 November with the approval of the acquisition by the Korea Fair Trade Commission. The world's biggest container shipping company Maersk Line will pay 3.7 billion euros ($4.02 billion) for its acquisition of smaller German rival Hamburg Sud, it said on Friday. Combined, the two companies will be able to realise annual operational savings of about $350 million to $400 million, Maersk Line said in a statement fleshing out detail on the deal announced in December. "By keeping Hamburg Sud as a separate and well-run company, we will limit the transaction and integration risks and costs while still extracting the operational synergies," said Soren Skou, CEO of both Maersk Line and its parent A.P. Dr. August Oetker KG announces that, after more than 80 years, it is divesting its shipping business and will be selling Hamburg Süd with all activities, subsidiaries and principal assets. The world's seventh-biggest container operator, Hamburg Süd, has been sold to Danish conglomerate AP Moeller-Maersk. Maersk Line didn't disclose the purchase price of Hamburg Süd when it announced the takeover on Thursday, saying it hoped to complete the deal by the end of 2017. According to WSJ, Maersk Line agreed to pay roughly $4 billion, according to people familiar with the discussions, making it one of the biggest deals for a container operator. The acquisition will boost Maersk's presence on North-South shipping routes.

Following intensive talks with several interested parties, an agreement has been signed with Maersk Line A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark, which is subject to proper due diligence and the negotiation of a Sale and Purchase Agreement as well as the notification to various regulatory authorities. It is to be assumed that the transaction will be closed in late 2017 at the earliest, once the necessary approvals have been obtained. Global container liner shipping has been generating losses for years in the face of rising overcapacity. Nevertheless, Hamburg Süd has performed well compared with its competitors.

Speculations about an upcoming sale of Hamburg Süd have intensified in the market, says a report in WSJ. Hamburg Sud, the seventh-largest container-shipping operator world-wide in terms of capacity, is part of the Oetker Group, a family-owned German conglomerate, involved in shipping, banking, food and beverages. The Oetker family is discussing a sale of the shipping business, but no decision has been reached, one of the people said. “If a sale is decided, the process could start before the end of the year,” the person said. The price may seem high but the biggest obstacle could be the internal power struggle in the Oetker family, says some report. In its latest earnings statement, Hamburg Sud said it had revenue of $6.73 billion in 2015, but gave no net-income figures.

Hamburg Süd today christened its new containership Cap San Raphael in the presence of 700 guests at the Burchardkai Terminal in the Port of Hamburg. The ship’s Sponsor is Ingeborg Schäuble, former Chair of the German Welthungerhilfe and wife of the German Finance Minister, Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble. Other participants in the ceremony included   Dr. h. c. August Oetker, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Oetker Group, and Hamburg Senator for Economic Affairs, Frank Horch. The Cap San Raphael is one of six new container ships built for Hamburg Süd by the Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan. She is currently – like her sister ships – deployed in the liner service between Europe and the East Coast of South America.

Germany's second biggest container shipper Hamburg Süd is seeking options for the business after merger talks with bigger rival Hapag-Lloyd failed last year, Chief Executive Ottmar Gast said on Tuesday. "We are working on alternatives," Gast told reporters at the results news conference of Hamburg-Sued parent Oetker Group. Gast, who is part of the four-member management group of Oetker Group's holding company Dr. August Oetker KG, did not provide details, noting only that "size isn't everything".

With the Fernão de Magalhães, Aliança has christened the second of four identical new container ships for its cabotage fleet. The Naming Ceremony was held on September 26 at the container port of Porto Chibatão on the Rio Negro in Manaus. The Sponsor of the ship is Dionéia Thomas, the wife of Julian Thomas, who is General Manager Region South America East Coast of Hamburg Süd and Aliança. Dr. h.c. August Oetker, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Oetker Group and Partner of Dr. August Oetker KG, and Dr. Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, also took part in the ceremony. With the container ship “Fernão de Magalhães” the Hamburg Süd subsidiary Aliança is continuing to modernize its cabotage service fleet.

The Rio Bravo was christened Nov. 12 in the port of Antwerp. She is the fifth newbuilding in a series of six identical Hamburg Süd container vessels, each with a slot capacity of 5,900 TEU. Sponsor of the Rio Bravo is Laura Madeleine von Schubert, daughter of Roland Oetker, Managing Partner of R.O.I. Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH and Member of the Advisory Board of the Oetker Group. Following her delivery on 18 August 2009 at Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries (DMHI), the Rio Bravo was first deployed in the service between Asia and South America East Coast before being phased into the Europe – South America East Coast Service in mid-October. She will be calling at Antwerp for the first time for the christening.

The Bahia Negra, the last of a total of six identical 3,752 TEU Hamburg Süd container ships was christened at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) yard in Okpo/Korea. Sponsor of the newbuilding was Dr. Irmgard Gold-Kunisch, wife of Dr. Rolf Kunisch, a member of the advisory board of the Oetker Group. Following delivery on 23 August, the Bahia Negra will be phased into Hamburg Süd's liner service between Asia/South Africa and South America East Coast. The Bahia Negera is named after a small town in the northern tip of Paraguay. It lies in the region where the country meets Brazil and Bolivia at the Rio Paraguay, the river that marks the border to Brazil. The Bahia Negra completes the series of Bahia ships at DSME.
