USCG's New Cutters Can’t Arrive Soon Enough

The much-needed replacement for the U.S. Coast Guard’s long-serving medium endurance cutters (WMEC) took a giant step closer to joining the fleet as the first Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) was launched and christened at Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) in Panama City, Fla. on October 27, 2023.The future USCGC Argus (WMSM 915) was christened by the ship’s sponsor, Captain (Ret.) Beverly Kelley, the first woman to command a U.S. military vessel, the 95-foot patrol boat, USCGC Cape Newagen (WPB 95318).

In the United States, it is a frustrating time to be in the government shipbuilding business. Even though America depends upon maritime commerce and faces growing security risks at sea, shipbuilding is just not a major national focus.Up to now, shipbuilders have had it pretty good. For the past several years, big naval shipbuilders have enjoyed steady growth and strong performance. The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has awarded Hepburn and Sons LLC with the R&D Insulated Bus Pipe (IBP) Standard Interface to Naval Electrical Equipment.The team consist of Hepburn and Sons LLC, TEFELEN, NSWCPD, GD-Bath Iron Works, RSL Fiber, AeroNav, Staubli, FSU CAPS, KATO Engineering, Northrop Grumman Sykesville, General Atomics, Rolls Royce, ABS, ABB, DRS, and Roxtec. The NSRP investment is $1.14 million and the industry investment is $1.14 million. Vigor to Build US Army Landing Craft

The U.S. Army has chosen the Vigor design for its Maneuver Support Vessel (Light), MSV(L), a new generation of landing craft to replace the aging LCM-8 Mike boats. “This award is the culmination of a five year process of research and development that first began with Kvichak prior to its merger with Vigor,” said Frank Foti, Vigor CEO. Boykin Tapped as Next Newport News President

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Board of Directors has elected Jennifer R. Boykin to serve as executive vice president of HII and president of HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division, effective July 1. She will succeed Matt Mulherin, who announced that he will retire on August 1 after a 36-year career at Newport News Shipbuilding. US Navy Upgrades Mine Hunting Capabilities

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) delivered the first of three lots of mine hunting sonar upgrade kits to the U.S. Navy’s Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City Division. The ultimate end users will be the HM-12, -14 and -15 Mine Countermeasures Squadrons. The production contracts from the Navy’s PMS-495 are for upgrading 27 AQS-24A mine hunting systems into the more advanced AQS-24B system. The kits contain all the components necessary to upgrade the existing 27 AQS-24A mine hunting systems into the more advanced AQS-24B system. Work is being done in three production lots.

Lerwick Port Launches Latest VMS

Lerwick Port Authority have inaugurated a new Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) which utilises the latest technology to improve the handling of ship movements at the busy Shetland port. Transas, a world-leader in providing harmonised integrated solutions to the maritime industry, has installed the system across four sites covering the port area – port control in the main building and three remote stations, at Rova Head north of Lerwick and Maryfield and Kirkabister, on the island of Bressay, monitoring the northern approaches, inner harbour and southern approaches, respectively. Fibre and microwave links supply data back to port control. The completion was marked on Friday 19 August, 2016 with invitations extended to port users to view the new system.

Gibbs & Cox, Inc. (G&C) Chairman Ned Daffan announced today the appointment of Chris Deegan as President and Chief Executive, effective immediately. Deegan, previously Vice President of G&C's Engineering Group, will replace Rick Biben, who is retiring but will remain on the G&C Board of Directors. Deegan spent nearly 28 years in the Navy's acquisition and cost engineering communities, leading nuclear submarine, ship and combat systems programs prior to joining Gibbs & Cox in 2013.

Delia Succeeds Schmidt as Ohmsett Program Manager

MAR Incorporated has named John Delia the Program manager for Ohmsett – The National Oil Spill Response Research & Renewable Energy Test Facility, succeeding Bill Schmidt who retired in December 2015. Delia was most recently with BAE Systems where he served as a Program Manager responsible for the production and development of systems as well as the logistics for the Low Probability of Altimeter (LPIA), Common Data Link (CDL) and F-22 product lines within the Electronic Systems group. Prior to working at BAE systems he served as a Senior Engineer with Northrop Grumman supporting the Defense Metrological Satellite Program (DMSP) where he performed extensive data analysis and operations of sensors on satellites.

Transas VMS for Lerwick Harbor

Transas signed a contract with Lerwick Port Authority to install a new Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) to cover Lerwick Harbour, in Shetland. The new Transas system is required to replace Lerwick Harbour’s existing system. Lerwick is a major commercial port in Britain, strategically situated at the crossroads of the North Sea and North-East Atlantic. Handling more than 5,000 vessel arrivals, totalling over 12,000,000 gross tonnes, annually, the deep-water port’s users include fishing, oil and gas support, cargo, sailing, ferries and cruises.
