In the 45 years since the Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) opened on reclaimed land in Bahrain, the Middle East has become one of the world’s ship repair hotspots. A broad range of shipyards now service both regional and global markets.Regional yards have a ready market, with hundreds of offshore rigs working across the region together with the service ships that support them. Then there are thousands of tankers and gas carriers that arrive each year to load energy cargoes for far-flung destinations.

Dubai Reopens For Crew Changes

The Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) announced it is allowing crew changes to resume across all ports and anchorage areas in the region after crew changes in the major global shipping hub had been paused due to the coronavirus outbreak.Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions and border closures imposed by governments around the world have caused significant hurdles to crew changes and left hundreds of thousands of seafarers stranded onboard ships or unable to join ships.

Dubai Launches Agency to Regulate Dhow Sector

The Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), in cooperation with Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA), have launched the Marine Agency to oversee wooden dhow ships and regulate all their activities while they’re in Dubai waters. AEGIR-Marine to Open Middle East Office

AEGIR-Marine has announced a new office in Dubai, UAE. The maritime stern tube seal and propulsion system service provider will now operate out of offices in the Netherlands, Singapore, Shanghai, Namibia, USA and UAE. The Dubai service team will focus its activities on both the strong Middle East oil and gas industry in addition to the company’s core business of commercial vessels.“In terms of stern tube seal and propulsion system service and parts, we are filling the gap between equipment makers and maritime service providers. Grandweld Shipyards Announces Solid 2018

UAE-based Grandweld Shipyards said that it has closed a number of deals, as part of its landmark milestones achieved during 2018.Grandweld’s latest achievement was highlighted with the signing of two new contracts; One with Wesal Shipping, and the second with Mars Marine Services, said a press release from the company. Both companies are long term clients of the company.The contracts entail the delivery of two more GW42M Aluminum Crew Boats. Albwardy Damen Celebrates Tenth Anniversary

Albwardy Damen celebrated its tenth anniversary on November 15th by officially opening its new ship repair facility at Dubai Maritime City (DMC). Over 100 guests from both the regional maritime industry and the Dubai government joined the Albwardy Damen management team at their new DMC workshop and Dubai HQ for the opening ceremony, followed by lunch on board the famous Queen Elizabeth II (QE2) ocean liner. DP World Gross Volume Up 4.8% for 1H 2018

Dubai-based port and terminal operator DP World said that its gross volumes rose 4.8 percent to USD 35.6 billion s for the six months to 30 June 2018,  despite uncertainties in the container market. On a reported basis, revenue grew 14.4%.Revenue growth is supported by the volume growth across all three regions and the impact of new acquisitions including Drydocks World LLC (Drydocks), Dubai Maritime City (DMC) and Cosmos Agencia Marítima (CAM).Profit attributable to owners of the Company before separately disclosed items has dropped 2.1%on a reported basis but grew 5.2% on a like-for-like basis.DP World Group Chairman and CEO, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem

Dubai Maritime City Authority to Develop UAE’s Maritime Sector

Albwardy Damen Receives Superbrands 2018 award

Albwardy Damen, the joint venture shipyard in Sharjah, UAE, between the Damen Shipyards Group and UAE-based Albwardy Investment, has received a prestigious Superbrands 2018 Award from Superbrands Worldwide, the world’s largest independent arbiter of branding. It pays tribute to the strongest and most valuable brands in the world through its publications and national marketing programmes. The winners of these awards were selected by the International Arbitration Board of the Award, made up of more than 4,000 marketing experts from the UAE business community. The Hamriyah Free Zone in which Albwardy Damen operates won the Superbrands UAE Award for 2018 for the second time in a row.

DP World to Invest $1bn in Expansion

DP World is planning to annually inject up to $1 billion in global investments until 2020, local media quoted company chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem as saying. The expansion at Prince Rupert in Canada opened for business. DP World Limassol in Cyprus opened a new cruise terminal. A series of acquisitions, technology tie-ups and sustainable business achievements all formed part of the activities that saw the global trade enabler expand its business horizons across the world. The global port operator has begun work on a new logistics centre in Kigali (Rwanda) and at a new terminal project in Posorja (Ecuador). DMCA Briefs ‘Sea Dubai’ Initiative

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) praised the ‘Sea Dubai’ initiative launched by the Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA). He described the initiative as instrumental to leveraging the cooperation between key stakeholders in the maritime business in public and private sectors towards boosting the competitiveness of Dubai as a prominent global maritime leisure destination. Receiving Amer Ali, Executive Director of Dubai Maritime City Authority, Al Tayer stressed the importance of making concerted efforts for the success of ‘Sea Dubai’ initiative, which lays solid foundations for boosting the competitiveness of Dubai in the global marine marketplace.

DP World to buy Dubai Maritime City, Drydocks World

DP World said on Monday that it had entered into a deal to buy two other Dubai state-owned maritime companies for a total of $405 million.   The Dubai-based ports operator will acquire Maritime World, the 100 percent owner of Dubai Maritime City, for a purchase consideration of $180 million, and 100 percent of Drydocks World by means of a capital injection of $225 million.   Both deals are expected to close before the end of the first quarter of 2018, it said. DMCA Training for Marine Drivers

The Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) has revealed the growing demand for marine driving licenses in the Emirate of Dubai as reflected by the high volume of applications for marine crews operating within local waters. In response, the DMCA’s Maritime Traffic Management team ensures the Skippers’ Evaluation course being provided to Skippers with a one-hour briefing class on ‘Marine Knowledge for Boat Operation’ with a focus on deepening and enriching modern marine knowledge in managing operational processes before undergoing formal inspection. This is a step forward in integrating maritime safety, operational efficiency and safe navigation along the local coastlines to position Dubai at the forefront of the world's most advanced, competitive and attractive maritime and logistics hubs.

DMCA Readies for International Boat Show

As part of its role as the government entity supporting Dubai International Boat Show 2017, the Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) is taking all the necessary measures to ensure the issuance of marine licenses to boats visiting and participating in the 25th edition of the Middle East’s biggest maritime event taking place at the Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi from February 28 to March 4, 2017. The Authority is issuing marine licenses valid for three months and renewable onwards which authorize crafts to sail and dock in the territorial waters of the Emirate of Dubai, in line with its commitment to providing an integrated package of marine licensing services specifically for the upcoming show to ensure maritime safety and operational efficiency along the coast of Dubai.

UAE Shipyard Begins Operations as Albwardy Damen

Albwardy Marine Engineering and Damen Shipyards Sharjah have officially brought both brands together under one umbrella. Under the new name, Albwardy Damen, the United Arab Emirates-based shipyard will continue to construct newbuild steel and aluminum vessels as well as provide the same ship repair services to its marine and oil and gas customers in the Middle East. Albwardy Marine Engineering was founded in 1978 and has been a joint venture with Damen Shipyards Group since 2008. In 2014 the official opening of Damen Shipyards Sharjah took place.

Clarksons Platou's Inaugural Seminar at DMCA’s Dubai Maritime Week

The Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) is set to facilitate a first-of-its-kind seminar dedicated to Middle East shipping and offshore activities. The event will be conducted by Clarksons Platou, a global leader in maritime brokerage and investment banking, as part of Dubai Maritime Week 2016 – the third edition of the region’s first comprehensive maritime event organized by the Authority, which will run from October 30 to November 3. The seminar is expected to attract several prominent regional and international industry figures and further reinforce Dubai’s growing popularity as a hub for major maritime events. DCMA to continue Organizing Anchorage of Maritime Crafts in Dubai

Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA), the government authority charged with regulating, coordinating and supervising all aspects of Dubai’s maritime sector, revealed its continuing efforts in organizing anchorage of maritime crafts across Dubai waters. Dubai is witnessing a big turnout of maritime crafts ranging from business and tourism, to sports and entertainment, due to its strategic position as a global business and tourism hub. The continuous follow-up of these procedures come in response to the resolution recently issued by the Authority to compel anchored marine crafts to conform to the highest maritime safety standards during anchorage time in the diving areas
