The Navy is surveying and assessing storm-related damage to shipyards and
land-based facilities in the Gulf Coast region affected by Hurricane
Katrina.
At this time, it is not possible to fully ascertain the impact to the
numerous private and public facilities that support the Navy throughout the
region as basic relief and clean up operations are ongoing and safety
remains a predominant concern.
Initial reports indicate that one Navy ship under construction in the region
- KIDD (DDG 100) at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Pascagoula, MS - has
sustained damage. The extent of that damage is still being determined.
Another ship at the shipyard - SAN ANTONIO (LPD 17) - is providing shelter
and food to Navy and contractor personnel onsite.
The Navy will provide updated information as storm conditions abate and
recovery operations progress.
