Student exchanges, faculty collaborations and programmatic partnerships are now possible between the United States’ SUNY Maritime College and Svendborg International Maritime Academy in Denmark.

The two institutions earlier this month signed a memorandum of agreement that will pave the way for academic cooperation and knowledge sharing.

“The shipping industry is international by nature,” said Joseph Hoffman, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at SUNY Maritime. “Developing these international partnerships gives students and faculty from both institutions a better understanding of how our industry works in different countries."

The agreement does not stipulate how or when any collaborations will begin or be carried out; instead it demonstrates that the two institutions are interested in working together in various capacities.

“The partnership provides the best possibilities for our students to create a career in a globalized maritime business through common activities and mutual exchange of knowledge and competencies,” said Jan Askholm, vice president for academic affairs at SIMAC.

SUNY Maritime also this fall signed agreements of this kind with National Taiwan Ocean University and the U.S. Marine Corps University College of Distance Education and Training.
