Pevassa Fishes for Efficient Propulsion

Spanish tuna vessel opts for fuel-efficient propulsion package. Based in Spain, the Pevasa Group recently ordered a complete propulsion system from MAN Diesel and Turbo for a new tuna vessel. The system is unique in that it comprises a package of three high-efficiency products, including a modern, medium-speed MAN 8L32/44CR engine with common-rail (CR) technology, a Renk RSVL-950 gear unit, and an innovative MAN Alpha VBS1100 CP propeller with Kappel propeller blade designs and rudder bulb. This combination increases the propulsion system’s efficiency by up to at least 9%, thereby helping to decrease costs, fuel consumption, and exhaust emissions. Pevasa  has a tradition for placing value on new technology: in 2009, the company purchased a structurally identical CR-engine that completed the upgrade of its six-boat tuna fishing fleet. It was thus one of the first customers to opt for MAN Diesel and Turbo’s CR technology, which controls the engine’s fuel-injection pressure and timing to reduce overall fuel consumption. The Kappel propeller adds another enhancement to the overall package with its special design that reduces the power-consuming vortices formed at the propeller tip region. EU NAVFOR Destroys More Pirate Groups

On March 12, after receiving a report from MV E.R. Lubeck (Liberian Flag, German owner), that pirates in two skiffs had tried to hijack her, COMEUNAVFOR initiated a surge operation to intercept and disrupt the pirate action group (PAG). The EU NAVFOR Flagship ITS Etna tasked the EUNAVFOR Swedish and Luxemburg Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) and EUNAVFOR Warship HNLMS Tromp against the PAG consisting of one mother skiff and two skiffs.

NOAA Fisheries Seize 80 Tons of Albacore

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) Office for Law Enforcement (OLE) special agents have seized 80 short tons of albacore tuna, worth over $141,000 , from a Cambodian-flagged longline fishing vessel, the Long Man Yun #66 in Pago Pago, American Samoa, for allegedly violating U.S. fishing laws. Company Fined for Ocean Dumping Violation

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a News Release stating that a company was fined $5,000 for improper disposal of a tuna skiff offshore of Pago Pago, American Samoa in violation of the Ocean Dumping Act. The company failed to provide notification and disposal information to the EPA and the U.S. Coast Guard and failed to take the skiff more than 12 miles offshore before sinking it. source: HK

Oil Exploration Causes Diver Shortage

Increasing exploration for offshore oil reserves is causing a shortage of divers in the aquaculture industry. Divers are being offered more than $300,000 a year for exploration work, compared $70,000 for work in the tuna and abalone sectors.
