Bollinger Marine Fabricators, L.L.C., a Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. company, has signed a contract for the design and new construction of a 55,000 barrel (BBL) Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA’90) compliant tank barge, with Martin Midstream Partners, LP. Contract terms and conditions were not disclosed. The announcement was made by Bollinger executive vice president of new construction, Chris Bollinger. The 55,000 BBL tank barge, M 6000, will be built at Bollinger Marine Fabricators, L.L.C., in Amelia, Louisiana. The M 6000 will be a clean oil barge that is classed and certified ABS + A1 Oil Tank Barge, Manned Ocean Services. The barge will measure 350-foot long, with a 70-foot beam and a depth of 25-feet. The barge is being built to meet the requirements of OPA’90, with ten (10) cargo compartments and two (2) separate pumping systems. The barge will be outfitted with the Bludworth Cook Marine ATB Flexible Connection System.
American Commercial Lines Expands Liquid Cargo Fleet With Purchase of Eight 20,000 Barrel Capacity Tank Barges. The first phases of a USCG final rule implementing measures for maintaining or regaining control of a tank barge that will reduce the likelihood of a tank barge's grounding and spilling its cargo are effective June 19, 2000. These measures are necessary, according to USCG because without them a tug that loses its tow lacks ready means for regaining control of it. The rule is designed to increase the safety of marine transport and protect the environment.
The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Press Release stating that a tank barge carrying approximately 1.26 million gallons of liquid asphalt grounded in the James River about five miles south of Richmond, Virginia. One tank has been damaged. The incident is under investigation.

American Commercial Lines Inc. has secured a more than $15m contract with Andrie Inc. to build an ABS classed 50,000 barrel, double-skinned tank barge.
