Volvo Penta Signs Agreement with Garmin

AB Volvo Penta and Garmin Ltd have entered into a joint development and marketing strategic alliance to provide instrumentation, navigation and communication equipment for marine use. Volvo Penta and Garmin will jointly develop marine instrumentation, navigation, and communication equipment, which will be marketed in a complete customer offer for fully integrated drive systems and instruments. "The Volvo Penta and Garmin strategic alliance  will provide our mutual  customers access to state-of-the-art communication technology and a complete programme of multifunctional instruments which will significantly strengthen our world-leading position when it comes to complete, integrated drive systems for boats," said Göran Gummeson, President of Volvo Penta.   As electronic systems continue to gain ground in the marine sector, the propulsion system in boats is being increasingly integrated in the driver's environment. Volvo Penta is linking engines and transmissions with instruments, controls and accessories in the electronic platform known as EVC, Electronic Vessel Control. Using this electronic platform, Volvo Penta has been able to deliver products including the joystick and the Dynamic Positioning System. Volvo Penta's and Garmin's joint products will be introduced successively, starting in 2012.


McDermott, Bay Begin Alliance at Harbor Island Facility

J. Ray McDermott, Inc., a subsidiary of McDermott International, Inc., and Bay Ltd. have formed a strategic alliance to pursue fabrication projects in the offshore oil and gas industry, using McDermott's Harbor Island facility near Corpus Christi, Texas. Under the alliance, J. Ray McDermott will provide overall project management, engineering and procurement services, as well as the assembly areas, lifting equipment dredged slip and bulkhead at Harbor Island.


Smit In Talks With Rivtow

Smit International is in talks to buy Canada's Rivtow Marine, a harbor towage service and transport firm active in Canada and the U.S. No financial details of the planned takeover were immediately available. Smit International also said it would boost its stake in Belgium's Salvage & Towage Union to 49 percent from 26 percent for an undisclosed sum. In addition the company said it was discussing further developing a strategic alliance with Salvage & Towage Union


AMSC, HHI Expand Wind Power Alliance

American Superconductor Corporation, a global power technologies company, and South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (Korean Stock Exchange: HHI) announced that they have expanded their strategic alliance to include the joint development of a five megawatt (MW) full conversion wind turbine primarily for use in the burgeoning offshore wind industry. YSS, Gagasan to Buy Tankers

YAYASAN Sabah Shipping (YSS) and Gagasan Carriers Sdn Bhd (GCSB) have formed a joint-venture company, under which it will acquire two new chemical tankers costing $39 million. The formation of the joint-venture company, GS Tankers Sdn Bhd, is the culmination of a four-year strategic alliance between YSS and GCSB in managing and operating YSS' first chemical tanker, Danum.
