Maritime Activity Boosts in Search for Flight 370
The maritime industry has ramped up contributions to the worldwide search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 as an international team scours for signs of the Boeing 777 which went missing nearly two weeks ago with 239 people on board. Merchant and navy ships have recently helped to relaunch a search in the Indian Ocean where Australian authorities said satellites spotted possible debris. So far, no confirmed signs of wreckage have been reported.

The barging industry has the answer. It’s nowhere near as complicated as it seems. As shale gas production continues to ramp up across the United States, millions of gallons of wastewater is created through the process of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. That waste, referred to as shale gas extraction wastewater (SGEWW), or frack water, needs transport to storage and reprocessing facilities around the U.S., including disposal sites in Louisiana, Texas and Ohio.

Nordic American Tankers CEO: Market is Improving
Nordic American Tankers Limited (NAT) issued a letter to shareholders from the company’s chairman and CEO, Herbjorn Hansson, noting improved market conditions for NAT’s Suezmax tankers. In a December 10, 2013 letter to shareholders, Hansson highlighted improved conditions in the Suezmax spot tanker market, and in his latest letter said the development has continued into 2014. “We do not predict spot tanker rates,” Hansson said.

Grounded Vessel Leaked 6,000 Gallons
According to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), grounded fishing vessel Arctic Hunter has leaked approximately 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 400 gallons of hydraulic lubricating oil, and a light sheen was seen surrounding the vessel. Resolve-Magone Marine Services has secured pollution sources on the vessel, the report said, and the company will conduct further salvage operations as weather conditions allow.

Matson Orders Engines for New Containerships
Matson Navigation Company, Inc., a U.S. carrier in the Pacific Ocean, announced an order today for two MAN B&W, 7S90ME-GI dual fuel engines with liquefied natural gas (LNG) capability to be installed aboard two new “Aloha Class” 3,600 TEU containerships ordered last week from with Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. (APSI). The deal includes an option for three further vessels. The dual fuel engines, each developing 42,700 kW, are reportedly the largest ever ordered in terms of power output.
