Sherwin-Williams has been awarded the contract to supply marine coatings as part of a three-year overhaul of the supercarrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71). The project began in August and will continue through late 2012 at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Newport News, where the vessel was constructed and launched in October, 1984. The 1,092-ft long carrier has seen duty in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.

The coatings contract was awarded by Mid-Atlantic Coatings, Chesapeake, Va. Sherwin-Williams will provide just-in-time coatings as work progresses for the exterior topside, underwater hull and freeboard.   Tank coatings include potable water, ballast, feedwater, reserve feedwater and damage control voids.

Over 20 Sherwin-Williams military-approved coatings products will be used in the coatings project. Many of these were chosen for the innovative solutions they provide:
•    rapid cure, single-coat protection, providing fast return to service and reducing overall material costs and labor
•    optically active pigment (OAP) tank linings, allowing holidays and pinholes to be easily detected, eliminating application issues and increasing service life
•    low VOC’s, providing environmental protection to meet today’s stringent standards

Sherwin-Williams will also provide technical expertise and work closely with both the shipyard and contractor throughout the project.
